The Coming of The Extended Set of Marimbas in Zimbabwe

The 14 Key Baritone Marimba known as the extended baritone and its sibling; the bass marimba are a groundbreaking invention by Nicholas Manomano, who identified a gap in the Zimbabwena marimba world and sought to revolutionize the instrument. Drawing inspiration from his own journey as a soprano marimba player, Manomano discovered that while the baritone marimba, popularized by Kwanongoma College of African Music, had its own charm, it lacked some of the beloved tones that he treasured from the soprano range. He recognized that the baritone and bass marimbas, with their limited 9 and 8 keys, respectively, did not fully capture the musical spectrum he desired. This led him to the bold decision to extend the baritone marimba from 9 to 14 keys and the bass marimba from 8 to 11 keys, bringing new depth and new playing dimensions to the marimba instruments.

Not stopping there, Nicholas Manomano also saw the potential to further expand the soprano and tenor marimbas, adding extra few keys, taking them from 17 to 20, thus enhancing their versatility. This innovation opened up a broader range of musical possibilities, particularly in the keys of C, G, and D, offering marimba players richer and more complex sounds to explore.

The first extended marimbas were carefully crafted by Eliot Ndlovu, following the precise instructions of Nicholas Manomano. These marimbas made their debut at Prince Edward School, Nicholas Manomano's former school as a teacher, where they were met with great enthusiasm and quickly gained popularity. These marimba instruments were soon introduced to Dominican Convent School also. From there, the idea spread like wildfire, inspiring schools across the country to adopt these new marimbas. Today, the extended marimba set has become the most sought-after and fastest-selling marimba set, transforming the landscape of marimba playing and leaving an indelible mark on the world of music.
